What is "Libtech"?
"Libtech" is a project that integrates science and technology into the library platform. It is a space within the "Rzhevskaya" library where the most innovative directions of its work are concentrated, and the pulse of the times is most palpable. The main goal of the project is to open up the world of science and technology to both children and adults. In "Libtech," you can set the direction for your personal development for years to come and acquire basic skills for a new profession. The space offers original courses, workshops, masterclasses, and lectures for local residents and city dwellers. The technical facilities of "Libtech" allow for working on computers and experimenting with 3D modeling, among other activities.
Why is the "Rzhevskaya" Library a Territory of History?
In addition to its other functions, the "Rzhevskaya" library serves as a center for studying and popularizing the history of the district. This work is carried out in completely new formats. The staff of the local history projects sector has a broad scope of responsibility. This includes the website and mobile app "Interactive Map of the Krasnogvardeysky District"; the mobile app "Rzhevka AR," which allows users to view lost historical monuments; and a model of Ilyinskaya Sloboda, created in collaboration with "Libtech" staff. This is why we consider our library a territory of history, where modern technologies and unconventional presentation of facts are combined with the preservation of traditions. We also continue to offer traditional tours and exhibitions.
The "Rzhevskaya" Library as a Creative Space
Our library is also a place for inspiration and engagement with the arts. Visitors to "Rzhevskaya" can enjoy poetic, plastic, and theatrical workshops, literary evenings, exhibitions and performances, plays and festivals, open meetings, and masterclasses. You can listen to a wide range of music, from classical to avant-garde.
As is well known, everyone has many talents. To reveal them, a creative environment that stimulates and inspires is needed. The "Rzhevskaya" space fosters this environment with passionate individuals whose cultural outlook is not limited to current trends or retro styles. Here, we respect the tastes of different generations.

Library "Rzhevskaya"
The "Rzhevskaya" library is far from the stereotypical library depicted in gloomy jokes—with dusty bookshelves and drowsy librarians. It is a high-tech cultural and information center that opens up vast opportunities for its visitors. This primarily involves literary education, local history studies, and the development of scientific, educational, business, and creative initiatives. The library operates fully in line with its motto, "The Future is Near!" In "Rzhevskaya," the future truly becomes the present, and the past inspires and unites generations.
But the library would not be what it is without its history, its staff, and its readers over the years. Without what is often referred to as its "life experience." And "Rzhevskaya" has a significant amount of it. Over more than seven decades, the library has experienced many upheavals with the country, changed several addresses, but has retained its name and become an integral part of the district's sociocultural landscape.
Founded in 1946, the "Rzhevskaya" library emerged during a difficult time when the entire country and Leningrad were just beginning to recover from the devastating war. Its first address was Novo-Rabochiy Settlement (southeast of the Rzhevka station), house 40. The library was located in one of the rooms of the girls' secondary school No. 137. The "Rzhevskaya" collection, like other new libraries, was built up through various donations. City libraries contributed their duplicate copies and organized voluntary book collections among the population.
In 1958, the Nov-Rabochiy Settlement was abolished, and its buildings were given new addresses. The previously unnamed passage was renamed Bratskaya Street, and the school building was numbered 26. By then, however, the library was no longer there. In 1957, "Rzhevskaya" moved to a new location at 57 Ryabovskoe Highway, occupying part of the first floor. There, a children's department, an adult subscription service, and a reading room began operations.
A significant event in the library's history occurred in 1958 when a branch was opened in Novo-Kovalevo Settlement (south of Post-Kovalevo station). It was located in a small wooden house at 12 2nd Poperechnaya Street. The branch existed until 1984.
Due to its specific location, "Rzhevskaya" faced understandable difficulties in attracting readers. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, its staff addressed this issue by organizing library service points and bookmobiles.
In 1973, the modern Krasnogvardeysky District was established, separated from the Kalininsky District. Thus, "Rzhevskaya" gained a new administrative-territorial affiliation. In 1976, the Centralized Library System of the Krasnogvardeysky District was created, with the flagship being the Central District Library named after N. V. Gogol. "Rzhevskaya" became a branch of this library system.
In the late 1970s, active construction began in the Rzhevka-Porokhovye area. Residents of the old houses moved to the new buildings. In the 1980s, the number of readers at the library on 57 Ryabovskoe Highway gradually decreased. Staff members resigned, and the condition of the library deteriorated. In 1986–1987, "Rzhevskaya," used as a book storage facility for the Gogol Library, was attacked by vandals who broke windows and started a fire. After that, "Rzhevskaya" was closed for inspection, and preparations for relocating the library began.
From February to April 1988, the "Rzhevskaya" collection and equipment were moved to a newly constructed building at 35 Industrial Avenue, Building 1. This elongated building was built according to a standard project developed by the 4th Architectural Workshop of LenNIIPROEKT. Some of the spaces on the first floor were designated for two libraries.
During the reorganization, children's books and magazines were set aside for a new children's library No. 5, which opened in 1989 in the same building and is now named "GOROD."
On September 15, 1988, the reading room of "Rzhevskaya" started operating, and the subscription service began on December 11 of the same year.
In 1998, "Rzhevskaya" opened a computer services room, the first in the Centralized Library System of the Krasnogvardeysky District, which was quite symbolic. The library was and remains an experimental platform for testing modern methods of working with readers. In terms of using advanced library technologies, "Rzhevskaya" is hard to match.
The idea of renovating the library began to take shape in 2013. A development concept for "Rzhevskaya" was created, and a technical assignment was prepared for designers. After the design project was developed and funding for the renovation was secured, architectural design followed. At the end of 2015, staff began packing the library's collection and equipment. In 2016, "Rzhevskaya" was closed for renovation, and its team, divided into parts, continued working in three other district libraries.
On November 24, 2017, the transformed "Rzhevskaya" library officially reopened to readers. Today, it focuses on three main areas: local history, modern technology, and creativity. In addition to a rich collection of professional and literary books (over 60,000 volumes) and access to electronic databases, it offers numerous opportunities for personal growth.
In "LibTech," you can type and print text, send emails, or find information online. Besides computers and multifunction devices for printing, copying, and scanning, there is a compact and easy-to-use 3D printer. "LibTech" staff can help you learn 3D modeling skills and create three-dimensional parts for scientific projects or, for example, a remote-controlled car.
The theme of local history is reflected even in the library's interior design. Prints of local landmarks, artifacts on shelves, and a model of Ilyinskaya Sloboda... Thanks to a specially developed mobile app, "Rzhevskaya" allows you to see lost historical monuments of the current Krasnogvardeysky District.
Among the library's highlights are comfortable reading and working zones. These include window consoles with individual lighting, power outlets, comfortable chairs and cushions, and boxes—glazed rooms for individual work or small group sessions. Users can connect laptops and even use wall panels for the most visual presentation of ideas and projects, making creativity more productive. The boxes are isolated from the main library space, so the noise of daily library life does not intrude, promoting complete immersion in work.
"Rzhevskaya" also features a universal space called "Scene" for lectures and concerts; "ThisPHOTO" space with professional photography equipment, where conferences, seminars, and workshops can be held; a lounge area called "Steps"; and a children's area for visitors with young children.
The library boasts an innovative book lending station, "Smart Shelf," designed to help readers choose literature. This self-service bookshelf allows you to borrow and return books without needing a librarian's assistance. The "Smart Shelf" displays a rating of the most popular books among "Rzhevskaya" readers. Additionally, it features recently returned books that are often in high demand.
"Rzhevskaya" is expanding the capabilities of the electronic library card. A special locker for personal belongings with electronic ticket access has been installed in the library lobby. By leaving books, keys, or other valuable items in a locker, you can rest assured of their safety.
The library conducts tours, is widely represented on social media, and actively participates in large-scale events such as "Library Night" and "Museum Night." Additionally, "Rzhevskaya" features a cozy snack café, so there's food for both thought and appetite!
